The Global TIES curriculum consists of two courses which may be taken either sequentially or concurrently:

 

ENG100A: Principles of Team Engineering

This 2-unit course is an introduction to the practice of engineering as a team-driven profession. Weekly lectures expose students of all levels to the design process, verbal and written communication, principles of teamwork, project management, entrepreneurship, and community involvement. Additionally, students are divided into groups of 5-10 to participate in a "paper project". Each team is paired with a non-profit community organization and will design a plan to help this organization solve a technical problem. This is designed to prepare students for participation in the hands-on projects of ENG100L

 

ENG100A consists of two weekly 1-hour lectures with both faculty and outside speakers. It typically requires approximately 4 hours of outside preparation and work. There is a final exam. ENG100A is offered every quarter.

 

ENG100L: Team Engineering Laboratory

ENG100L is the design lab component for Global TIES projects available to students. All projects have an assigned faculty mentor and advisor. This course is designed to provide pultidisciplinary, long-term project experience on vertically-integrated teams of students from freshmen to seniors. Students are encouraged to participate over multiple quarters until project completion, or as needed to fulfill technical elective requirements.

 

ENG100L has 1 hour of weekly lecture and two hours of team lab meeting. It is expected that students will spend approximately 4 hours of additional group, and self-directed work. Grades are based on academic milestones such as design reviews, individual design notebooks, reports, presentations, peer- and self-evaluations, and feedback from the communit client. Students can expect to participate in a poster session mid-quarter as well as a presentation and design review during 10th week. ENG100L is offered every quarter.

How to register and become part of the Global TIES team!

 

Registration for Global TIES is an easy, three step process:

 

Step1: Check out the Global TIES projects

All students interested in being a part of a Global TIES team should check out the projects currently offered. Descriptions of the projects can be found under the Global TIES Projects section of the side menu. Consider which ones best fit your interests and course of study. You may choose to apply for a new or continuing project. During the application process, you will be asked to rank your project preferences.

 

Step 2: Apply to the Global TIES program using MyTIES

This provides the information that Global TIES needs in order to select team members based on preferences and project needs. After you submit your online application, you will be sent an email confirming that we have received your application.

 

After your application has been reviewed, you will receive another email advising you of your status. If accepted, this email will include the information you need to register for your Global TIES project section.

 

Step 3: Sign up in WebReg according to the instructions in your email!

The Global TIES program is intended to give students an extended experience with design as a start-to-finish process. The course emphasizes a number of skills that students need in order to become successful professionals after graduation. Eavaluation will include these aspects of the course, as well as the quality of the achievements in the student's technical area.

 

Communication

Each project will require written reports, oral proposal and progress presentations, oral communications with project partners and consultants, and intra-team communications.

 

Analytical thinking, organizational skills, and interdisciplinary experience

Because of the scope and size of the project is much larger than is possible in traditional courses, students must apply what they have learned to ambiguous and open-ended problems across a variety of disciplines. This incourages the development of students' analytical thinking, creative problem-solving, and organizational skills.

 

Teamwork experience

Because projects are large, effective teamwork is an essential component. Students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to sign up for Global TIES. Students can expect a wide variety of majors on their team, not only from the various disciplines of engineering, but increasingly from the sciences, arts, and humanities as well. Students quickly learn that the outcome of the project depends on the efforts of every team member, and on fully utilizing the skillset each team member brings to the project.

 

Mentorship

Global TIES projects are complex and open-ended. This encourages students to pursue non-traditional educational resources. Projects typically utilize upper-class students in a mentorship role, allowing them to teach and guide less experienced students. Students are encouraged to learn from each other, as well as the project partner and academic consultants who have experience relating to the project.

 

Resource management

Each team is given a quarterly budget for their project. As a result, students learn the practical as well as theoretical aspects of managing a team and working on a project.

 

Customer awareness

Projects are drawn from local community organizations and international NGOs. Customer satisfaction is an important criterion in judging project success. Hence, the projects increase the students' awareness of the importance of the customer in producing a high-quality product.

 

Expanded awareness of the community

By dealing with people outside of the academic community, students become more aware of the world outside UC San Diego. Students learn the local and global context and impact of the projects they work on, raising their awareness of critical issues impacting the community.

 

Professional ethics

Professional conduct, both in relation to the project partner and within the team itself, will be an essential component of successful projects. Students will have to maintain an awareness of ethical principles while meeting the demands of the project.
