Simulcast Lectures
[UC San Diego]
Simulcast Lectures is an innovative lecture content annotation, capture, and management system. Lecture content is captured using our podium system, which is essentially a computer with a touch screen that allows lecturers to annotate their lecture content. Lecture content is captured using a standard VGA connection, and is saved for later viewing and streamed live. In order to encourage students to come to class, lecturers can initiate polls in real-time via the podium interface, which allows them to track attendance and give quizzes. Students can respond to polls via iClickers, smartphones, and laptops. A Simulcast Moodle plugin provides online polling features and lecture content management. Presenters can use gesture tracking to display a virtual pointer and to highlight critical points. While watching the live lecture stream on Moodle, students can take notes on the lecture. By analyzing the notes, a 50 minute lecture can be automatically reduced to a 5-10 minute lecture while still retaining the most salient points

Quarter Goals

This quarter the team is working on getting a beta version of the complete system up and running so test units can be deployed in classrooms and lecture halls. The UI team is working on finalizing the UI design and implementing all required features as well as adding robustness to the annotation feature. The gesture tracking team is working on developing gesture tracking functionality for providing a virtual pointer to the lecturer using Microsoft Kinect technology. The multitouch table application team is working to develop a touchscreen application for demonstrating and benchmarking the features of the team's touchscreen table.
