Course Overview

In ENG 100D (4 units), Global Sustainable Development Design, students learn how to apply the equity-focused, community-centered design process.  Students work in interdisciplinary teams with a non-profit organization/NGO, designing a solution to a real-world problem related to one or more of the UN SDGs.  Selected prospective solutions will be transferred to ENG 100L (2 units), Design for Development Lab, where they will be iterated, built, tested, and deployed by interdisciplinary teams of students in collaboration with one or more of our long-term local or global community partners.  Students may take ENG 100D once and ENG 100L six times for academic credit.  Students are advised to check with their home departments about how the courses may be used to fulfill technical or professional electives and practicum and minor requirements.

All majors are welcome.  ENG 100D is the prerequisite for ENG 100L.  ENG 100D may be taken before or concurrently with a student's first quarter in ENG 100L.

Application Process

Step 1: Check out the Global TIES Projects

All students interested in participating in a 100L team should check out the current projects. Consider which ones best fit your interests and course of study. You will be asked to rank your project preferences during the application process.

Step 2: Fill out the Application

This brief application provides Global TIES with the information needed to select team members based on preferences and project needs. After your application has been reviewed, you will receive an email advising you of your status. If accepted, this email will include the information you need to register for your Global TIES project.

Step 3: Sign up in WebReg according to your email's instructions!

If you would like to switch teams after you have applied and been accepted, please send an email to Dr. Mandy Bratton, Executive Director of the Center for Global Sustainable Development: mbratton@ucsd.edu.  Include your name, PID #, which team you're on, which team you wish to switch to, and why you would like to switch.
